Chemistry with Cabbages, by Mrs Walsh
Date: 10th Mar 2023 @ 3:17pm
The year 6 children made an indicator out of cabbage juice today and then tested the pH of some household chemicals like: vinegar, soap, sugar, lemon juice and surface cleaner. Purple plants (like cabbage) turn red in acids and green in alkalis therefore they are good to use as an indicator.
They moved their experiment on by conducting a neutralisation test; acid is the opposite of alkali so mixing the two makes neutral.
After that the children had fun with sodium bicarbonate, acid and a rubber glove! Sodium bicarbonate is an alkali, so it neutralises acid. The reaction produces carbon dioxide gas which is why it fizzes and bubbles.

Year 6 Science Fair a Great Success, by Mrs Walsh
Date: 8th Mar 2023 @ 6:08pm
As part of Science week, the Year 6 children held a Science Fair to celebrate the Science that goes on in school. The primary objective to the project was to approach a problem scientifically and have fun. The children's brief was to:
- Ask questions and form hypotheses
- Creat an experiment to test those hypotheses
- Organise their data and draw conclusions
- Write about scientific research
- Make links to the wider world
The project had to be experimental in nature as opposed to research oriented. In other words, they had to do a test, survey, or experiment to determine the answer to their question. The fair was then open for viewing and the children from Reception to Year 5 as well as the Year 6 parents enjoyed the observing the science exhibition.

How to keep safe online is an important part of our school curriculum and is something we learn about on a regular basis. Safer Internet Day is an important day in our school calendar and reminds us to focus on this very important area of safety.
Over the week, the children learnt lots about keeping safe online including what to do if they have a problem, feelings related to it and how their bodies may react to these feelings. They used a power of healing activity to highlight the feelings and responses of their bodies if they experienced something upsetting online. They then listed who they could talk to about these problems and how they would feel after. They revised the SMART rules with the help of the SMART crew, and showed how asking for help or giving advice can relieve worries! All the have shown great understanding and knowledge to help them if they ever have a problem online.
